Behind the Mountains by Edwidge Danticat. Celiane and her mother face struggles during election time in Haiti. After reuniting with her father in New York, the harsh winter and concrete landscape of her new home are a shock as she witnesses the struggle to earn a living, her brother's adjustment and her encounters with learning difficulties and school violence.

Shooting Kabul by N. H. Senzai. Fadi and his parents plan to leave Afghanistan and move to the United States. Chaos ensues, and he is left taking his sister Mariam through the crush of people. She lets go of his hand and becomes lost in the crowd. With Taliban soldiers closing in, the truck speeds away, leaving Mariam behind.
