Building Community

African Americans in Montgomery County, Maryland 1868 to the present

African Americans have a long and rich history in Montgomery County. The communities they built remain relevant to the larger community today. This exhibit explores the Pleasant View Historical Site, once a focal point of the rural community of Quince Orchard. Pleasant View has met the educational, religious, and socials needs of people throughout their lives. The closeness of the schoolhouse, church, and cemetery suggest that from school age to death, for the purposes of learning, worshipping, and eternally resting, members of the Quince Orchard community spent much of their everyday lives at this very important place.
