The Dayton Accords was the peace agreement signed in Dayton, Ohio that ocially ended the war in Bosnia in December 1995. The agreement established two semi-autonomous regions within Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina made up primarily of Bosniaks and Bosnian Croats and the Republika Srpska made up of a majority of Serbians. Both regions were established with a central government to oversee the individual political structures, economies and educational systems.

Despite the worlds delayed reaction to the horrific events in Bosnia the international community and organizations came together to contribute more than $14 billion in aid. Refugees were encouraged to return to their homes; however many of those who were displaced chose not to go back. For some the biggest impact of the Bosnian War has been the inability to locate their loved ones or the lack of knowledge as to what happened to them.
