While most cases are against Serbs or Bosnian Serbs, charges have also been brought against defendants of other ethnic groups, including Croats, Bosnian Muslims, and Kosovo Albanians for crimes committed against Serbs.

Slobodan Milosevic, the former Serbian military leader, was transferred to the ICTY in 2001. He died during his trial in 2006.

Radovan Karadzic, the former Supreme Commander of the Bosnian Serb Army was indicted on genocide charges for his alleged participation in organizing the massacre of Srebrenica in 1995 and leading the siege of Sarajevo. His trial ended in October 2014, he is currently still in custody at a detention center in the Netherlands. A verdict is expected to be reached in early 2016.

Ratko Mladic, Bosnian Serb military leader accused of committing war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, evaded arrest for over ten years until he was finally captured in 2011. Like many who have committed mass atrocities, Mladic claims he was just following orders. His trial started in 2012 and is currently still in process, a verdict is expected to be reached in 2017.
